As the carrier of economics, politics, science, technology, culture and education, the cities'prosperity level directly affects the overall economic development of the whole national; urban agglomeration, on the other hand, defined as an advanced form of spatial development. At present, as the economic competition becomes increasingly intensive between each nation, whether a nation adequately equipped with the integration of urban agglomerations which have the economies of scale, cluster effects, radiation effects and interaction effects becomes the sign measuring the national and regional comprehensive competitiveness. Currently there has been extensive theoretical researches on urban agglomeration, yet study on the agglomeration effect is neither enough nor systematic. Thus, this dissertation focuses on the research on aggregation effect and summarizes the characteristics, classification and other aspects of urban agglomeration. This gives theoretical value and practical significance to the government decision-making and the perfection of urban agglomeration research. The dissertation has been divided into six chapters. The first chapter provides the research purposes and current research status oversea and domestic, mainly focusing on the point of view which have already expressed by academicians as well as the theories which have the direct effect on this research. The second chapter mainly analyzes the morphology, characteristics and classification of urban agglomeration. Studies have shown that the main form of urban agglomerations, including spheres shape, strip shape, multi-center morphology and continuous morphology, are the cluster, openness, inner organic and so on. This sums up the different classification of urban agglomeration in accordance with spatial structure, economic attributes, administration attributes, and so on.The third chapter is the main part of this paper. It introduces the current studies on the evaluation model of urban agglomeration and constructs the cluster evaluation model from several dimensions including aggregation, structure, quality, innovation, and policy. Among these, the dimensions of aggregation, structure, quality, and innovation are on the same level; the policy dimension serves as the foundation of the above four dimensions. The establishment of the respective dimension is based on the function of the aggregation feature rather than the summary of urban development. The fourth chapter constructs the indicator system for aggregation evaluation. Abiding by the construction principles for the indicator system, this chapter designs the respective indicator for evaluation of the various dimensions. The fifth chapter is the empirical part which applies the indicator system for aggregation evaluation to the Wuhan Urban Circle. On the basis of the evaluation result, it systematically analyzes development status of Wuhan Urban Circle and puts forward corresponding countermeasures and suggestions. The last chapter serves as the conclusion of the whole dissertation, concluding the main content of the paper and provides insights for future research.
