Research and Development(R&D) is a direct way to achieve technological innovation which is a significant resource of enhancing the competitiveness of enterprises. Though, as the development of science and technology, product life cycle becomes shorter, R&D becomes more complex, at the same time, both the R&D cost and risk increase. So it is difficult for enterprises to carry out R&D alone. Enterprises take some measures to solve this problem, for example vertical R&D cooperation. But these enterprises which participate the vertical R&D cooperation are all rational, and they are all independent legal entitise which have decision-making ability. When they cooperate with each other for the same R&D project, there are same conflicts of interest between them. Especially for the upstream and downstream enterprises, they are in the different markets, so their behaviors are affected by the different market structures. At this time, basis of their own interests how they make decisions whether participate in the vertical R&D cooperation or not? And how they choose the partners? it is the basis and key to realize vertical R&D cooperation through solving these problems, expolering the intrinsic conflict and consistent of interest which exist between enterprises. Based on this background, this paper researches on the vertical R&D cooperation behavior of enterprises in the different market structures.Firstly, this paper reviews some domestic and foreign literatures on vertical R&D cooperation at present, and puts forward some Problems to be solved.Secondly, from both inner and outer sides it analyses the reasons which cause enterprises to participate in the vertical R&D cooperation. Then it gets that maximizing profits is the root cause. At the same time it studies some factors of influencing vertical R&D cooperation behaviors. The results of this chapter provide later chapters'research with same theoretical foundation and basis for estimationThirdly, taking into account the R&D spillovers, the R&D capability of enterprise, the vertical R&D cooperation cost and risk, this paper creats a two-stage dynamic game model of supplier and manufacturer with complete information. Using this model it analyses the vertical R&D cooperation behavior of enterprises in the different market structures(upstream monopoly and downstream monopoly, upstream monopoly and downstream oligopoly, upstream oligopoly and downstream monopoly, upstream oligopoly and downstream oligopoly). By comparing the results of cooperation with the results of noncooperation, we can get in the different market structures how these factors influence enterprises'cooperation behaviors, and whether the enterprises'vertical R&D cooperation behaviors will occur or not? this paper also studies the the optimal vertical R&D cooperation size in different situations. At last, according to different situations, this paper confirms the results of study by different real cases. We hope that the results of study can not only provide a theoretical support for enterprises participating in the vertical R&D cooperation, but also can provide the effective reference for enterprises to grasp the vertical R&D cooperation rule, correctly formulate the R&D cooperation strategy, improve the competitive ability of enterprises and the supply chain.
