| Advanced Algebra and Space Analysis Geometry have always been the two basic courses in the Department of Mathematics in normal universities. Before 1997, they were taught respectively in most of the normal universities. With the progress of the reform of advanced education curriculum and teaching content, novel ideas in how to set the courses of Algebra and Analysis Geometry are raised constantly. There is no doubt that it is a new attempt that Linear Algebra and Analysis Geometry should be combined to one course, "Algebra & Geometry". Is it a simple "cut and paste" to combine Algebra and Analysis Geometry to one course? The answer is "no", and many domestic experts have the same opinion. There is deep inner reason to teach Algebra and Analysis Geometry together and it is more conformable with the essence of the subject. Linear Algebra is mainly a subject which studies the linear structure of finite dimensional linear space and its linear transformation while linear concept is in itself from the old Euclid Geometry. The concept of "Linear Space" is a kind of algebraic abstract. In many fields of modern engineering project and technology, because of the influence of computer and graph showing, the algebraic disposal of geometric questions, the visual disposal of algebraic questions, algebra and geometry are tightly combined. For the close relationship between algebra and geometry, there are unavoidable overlaid in their contents. So combining the two courses not only will save the time, but also will not cut too much of the content of analysis geometry, and, in some sense, it will strengthen them. The traditional separation of algebra and geometry has been unfit for the request of time, it must be reformed. To combine "Algebra" and "Space Analysis Geometry" is a good reform project. It correctly reflects the inner law, not only show the impact of advanced algebra as a tool of analysis geometry, but also specifically provide to linear algebra with many kinds of geometric background and geometric expression. It mustn't be a mechanical imitation of comprehensive universities or engineering universities when to reform the curriculum and the content ofalgebra and geometry. It should have the feature of normal universities. On one hand, based on the knowledge of algebra and geometry, according to the synthetic abilities which graduates from the department of mathematics in normal universities should master, the teaching content of this curriculum is chosen and organized; on the other hand, it should show the feature of advanced normal education, i.e., to show the normal character. |
