In order to find natural bioactive compounds from marine invertebrates, the extracts of 33 commonmarine invertebrates collected in Qingdao seashore were screened for their a-glucosidase inhibitionactivities for the first time. And the total asterosaponins content from starfish were determined. Moreover, the contents of total sugars and sulfate radical in raw polysaccharides from the marinesponge Tedania sp. were determined. And six other chemical constituents in this sponge weresuccessfully isolated and identified. The extracts of 33 common marine invertebrates were screened for their a-glucosidase inhibitionactivities. Among them, the extracts of Tubuaria marina Torrey, Asterina pectinifera, Apostichopusjaponicus and Scapharca subcrenata had higher inhibition rates. This result was the first report inChina. The total asterosaponins content from starfish was determined by photometric method usingvanillin-sulfuric acid as color-forming reagents. Various determination conditions were studied, and aquick, simple and accurate method was founded. It was found that the total contents of asterosaponinsfrom Asterias rollestoni and Asterias pectinifera were 0.0251% and 0.0313%, respectively. The contents of total sugars and sulfate radical in raw polysaccharides were analyzed after the rawpolysaccharides were extracted from the marine sponge Tedania sp. with hot water and diluted HClrespectively. Phenol-sulphuric acid method and BaCl2 turbidimetry method were used respectively. The total sugars the two extracts were 16.79%, 20.55% respectively, and sulfate radical, 24.02% and27.02%. This was also the first report about the contents of total sugars and sulfate radical in the rawpolysaccharides from this sponge in China. With the use of multi-chromatography methods, six compounds were isolated from the marine spongeTedania sp.. And their structures were identified as cholesterol, stearic acid,β-stiosterol, daucosterol,4-hydroxybenzoic acid and thymidine by the use of NMR spectra. They were isolated from spongeTedania sp. for the first time.
