In recent years, as a new surveying technology, 3D laser scanning has caught much attention of its high precision, high density, real-time measurement and activity. Trimble GS200 laser scanner is a new instrument introduced by our university. In order to apply the instrument better, operating capability and technical indexes need to be researched deeply. Taking Trimble GS200 3D laser scanner as data gathering device, and using Matlab computer language as tools to design software, the paper is to explore and research the theory, technology and method to adjust and test 3D laser scanner. In order to test GS 200 3D laser scanner, using measurement system analysis methods, laser scanner's testing fields are built and plans to test the laser scanner are designed. Then the data to test the laser scanner are captured. After analyzing the experiment data, the laser scanner's precision and accuracy of distance-measuring, angle-measuring, point-measuring precision and plane-measuring are tested. And the view field, the maximum distance and the minimum distance, which the laser scanner can measure, are also made sure. And it is confirmed that the laser scanner has no eccentricity. Then the affection to the laser scanner's precision are tested, which are caused by the measuring objects' properties, such as colors and positions, for the laser scanner will survey different objects with different properties. Laser Scanner Test software is developed and has the function to test different technical indexes.In order to get geometrical information quickly and efficiently, the methods to capturing points cloud are researched deeply, including optimizing the scanning parameters, setting the scanner and designing the survey procedure, etc. Points cloud are gathered outside and are proceeded. Then data process program module is developed for data registration based on the same region's points of several stations, which boost up the registration function of the laser scanner's original software. 3D models of single building and fixture are also built. Finally, some constructive advices and conclusion are given.
