With the increasing development of population and economic in China, water resources have been seriously polluted. The deficiency of water resources and the worsening water pollution have become one of the key limitations to implement sustainable socio-economic development strategy for our country. Therefore, the protection and utility of water resources become much more vitally important than ever. As one of the fundamental policies to control pollution in China, total pollutant amount control is based on environment capacity.Water environment capacity is the maximum permitting mass loadings in some given water per unit time, which is based on the range and hydrology condition of lake body, ways of pollution discharge and water quality target. Furthermore, water environment capacity not only reflects nature properties such as hydrology of the drainage but also social properties such as water quality target, It would continuously change in accompany with the variation of water resource condition and human needs. In a word, water environment capacity provides the basic principle of environment goal management, the main constraints for environment plan, and key technology support for total amount control of pollutant.The paper aims to study the environment capacity of lake and find out the existing problems by summarizing and analyzing different calculation methods of environment capacity of lake system.. In order to solve problems in practical calculation, a new approach derived from Geostatistics and Kriging interpolation method was developed to calculate environment capacity on the basis of hydrology data and monitoring data. Firstly, the characteristics of spatial structure of pollutant distribution were determined by statistics of geology in the study area. Secondly, the spatial distribution of pollutant concentration was presented through spatial interpolation to the whole study area by Kriging method. Thirdly, the water environment capacity of lake was estimated by the development the calculation function of lake water environment capacity on the basis of the mass conservation law. In the final, the main pollutant factors of the Erhai Lake, TN and TP, were calculated by the model established in this paper as a case study to test its estimation accuracy. It was found out that the estimated values approximated to the monitored values which indicated the Kriging interpolation methods exerted a powerful function to in our model.In comparison with other conventional methods, the model established in this paper can avoid complex calculation and own the characteristics of simple principle and functional application, which is suitable for the environment management of lakes.
