Aiming at the problems existed in the processing of difficult-to-machine materials, which is involved in the powerful cutting force, high cutting temperature, tool severe wear and so on, the strong arc processing is applied to the manufacturing of difficult-to-cut materials in this paper, and the strong arc processing characteristics of the difficult-to-cut materials are discussed deeply, in order to provide some theoretical basis for the application of strong arc machining.Firstly, a study on the mechanism of the arc process is made to a certain extent, which is based on a large number of researches on arc processing technology at home and abroad, analyzing the impact of the processing parameters on the arc processing characteristics. Secondly the properties of the difficult-to-cut materials are discussed, which is involved with Stainless Steel PH17-4, Titanium Alloy TC4 and Ni-Base Superalloy Inconel625, meanwhile, the influence regular of the material thermal physical properties to the electric arc process properties are studied. On the basic of this, the experimental studies which on the processing parameters to arc processing characteristics of the difficult-to-cut material are carried out. Research indicates that the more lager arc machining voltage, the higher processing efficiency, but the poorer surface quality. Moreover, the arc machining removal, surface quality and the heat-affected layer are greatly influenced by thermo physical properties of materials.Then the influence regular of the electrical parameters to surface quality of Stainless Steel PH17-4 and Titanium Alloy TC4 is analyzed by using the orthogonal experimental method, and the optimal process parameters is determined. Finally, the properties of material surface layer is checked and analyzed, Research indicates that the microstructure of material surface layer absorb heat fully refined after arc processing, the surface layer hardness is improved better and it has little effect on the properties of the material.Through the experimental analysis, a conclusion that the strong arc machining technique of difficult-to-cut materials has many characteristics, including the large feed rate, no cutting force, high efficiency, small heat-affected layer of material surface, etc. is clearly presented in this paper. It is a new machining method to difficult-to-cut materials manufacturing.
