Sugar is mainly achieved by the important process including crushing, juice, evaporation, crystallization and separation. So far, the sugar industry accounted for a large proportion in the task of energy saving and emission reduction in china. However, due to the level of equipment and automation behind the country, resulting in energy saving technology indicators such as power consumption, coal consumption, water consumption, wastewater emissions and other key indicators are far behind the international average level. In the "Twelfth Five Year Plan", the national development of the sugar industry has set a goal of energy consumption that standard coal in sugar industry requires less than 5 tons/100 tons of sugar. Therefore, the sugar industry is the urgent need to strengthen energy saving and emission reduction in the industrial process, which is not only the development of the sugar industry’s own requirements, but also the need to achieve sustained national economic development and the level of industrial technology meeting with the international level.This paper describes the design of energy consumption monitoring system for a sugar refinery in Guangzhou, which is mainly based on the ZigBee short-range wireless ad-hoc network technology and sensor technology. The energy consumption monitoring system achieved the purpose of on-line monitoring and management by uploading, displaying and analysing of reliable consumption data, which features high reliability and low cost. The energy consumption monitoring system is composed of three parts:data acquisition system, ZigBee wireless transmission network and Industrial Personal Computer data management system. The data acquisition system includes various of smart sensors to achieve the required production parameters collected periodically. The network transmission layer according to the actual energy consumption and production equipment layout of sugar refinery, to build a ZigBee wireless mesh network, mainly used to capture the underlying data upload and release of PC commands. The ZigBee network with self-organizing, self-healing, high network capacity, low power consumption and other advantages, is very suitable for the field of industrial production monitoring. ZigBee network connected PC via the serial port server, PC configuration software using tables and graphics to achieve the integration, display and analysis of the underlying data.This paper firstly introduces the research background and significance of the subject, followed by a brief analysis of the system requirements for the project. By comparing several short-range wireless communication technology, we selected the ZigBee technology, then designed the framework of the energy consumption monitoring system combined with the actual situation of sugar refinery. Next comes the ZigBee protocol stack, including the physical layer, media access control layer, network layer and application layer and the ZigBee networking technology. Through a set of temperature and humidity sensor experiments, we can display the development and application process of ZigBee technology better. Meanwhile, with the ZigBee signal transmission quality testing experiments, we got the results by comparing the quality of open space within the buildings. The results have certain reference value for project of building the network in sugar refinery. Finally, according to the actual situation of the sugar refinery, we selected the appropriate ZigBee module and various types of sensors suitable to build data acquisition layer and wireless transmission layer of energy consumption monitoring system.IPC used configuration software ForceControl to achieve the data statistical and display, so the real-time monitoring system was built.
