With more and more high buildings, mines and bridges constructions, the demands for steel mesh are bigger and bigger. Since welded steel mesh has advantage over tied mesh and the trends that welding takes place of tying are increasing, steel mesh automatic welding machine will have great development and market perspective. This paper developed a steel mesh automatic welding machine control system based on the analysis of EtherCAT and open CNC which is based on PC.The paper firstly introduced the development and research situation, analyzed the shortage of the present control system, confirmed the main research contents and explained the significance. The requirements of the design for steel mesh automatic welding machine control system was analyzed, the overall function and components were introduced and the process flows of steel mesh welding machine were analyzed. Then the specific requirements of both hardware and software were listed. Combined with the hardware development trends of CNC, the control system based on EtherCAT motion control platform was designed. And the hardware structure of the control system was sketched.The software development environment was introduced and the software structure of the control system was designed. According to the requirements, the software of the control system was divided into two parts. One was the logical control program, that was coded with PLC language and consisted of automation module, manual module, home module, initial module and so on; The other was HMI and process module of CAD file, that were coded with C#. The data exchanges between them were by ADS communication.The software of the steel mesh automatic welding machine control system was designed modularly. Realization ideas and algorithm flows of several modules, such as HMI, process and storage of nets information, arrange algorithm of straightening machines, control of automatic process, control of straightening machines, were explained in detail. The arrange thoughts with different numbers of straightening machines from one to three were researched, and the needed data was confirmed. In order to obtain the data, the arrange algorithms of different situations were presented.The control system software was developed using C# and PLC language. The paper introduced the control system realization and the debugging in field. Several problems, for example, the realization and operation of HMI, how to connect PLC program and field devices, the debugging issues that need attention, were all introduced.Finally, the completed work is summarized and the follow-up is prospected.
