Lathe tool is an important cutting tool in machining. The tool sharpening quality, directly affects surface quality and precision of the work piece. The use of advanced CNC sharpening appliance is the important guarantee for sharpening high quality, high precision lathe tool. Based on this, this thesis aims to study Five-axis CNC sharpening appliance to realize automatic sharpening tool.This thesis takes the ordinary lathe tool as the object. The basic structural parameters of lathe tool, geometry parameters of lathe tool and sharpening method were analyzed. The equation of the tool face and sharpening appliance’s mathematic model were deduced. Using planar displaying method principle, the three lathe tool faces is mapped to 2D Riemann plane. According to principle of isomorphism between 3D Euclidean space angle relationships with 2D Riemann plane metric relationship, space rotation angle relationship of lathe tool was expressed, analyzed and calculated. Lathe tool rotation total angle calculated when it was adjusted by different pose adjustment sequence. Pose adjustment program of adjusting time shorter and rotation angle less was selected. Thus the pose adjustment of lathe the tool sharpening was optimized.This thesis takes mainly column of CNC sharpening appliance with five axes as the design object. When the mechanical structure was designed, the main components were calculated and checked, such as the synchronous belt, spindle, linear ball guide rail pair, ball screw pair, a worm wheel and worm type turntable, the motor and the column. Through the selection and calculation of the components, the dimensions of components were determined. At last, the three dimensional modeling of column of CNC sharpening appliance was established by using the UG.In order to make the sharpening appliance can achieve the sharpening requirements, the main components were designed optimally and motion simulation. Strength, stiffness and vibration modal of the column were analyzed by finite element software ANSYS. Basis on this, appropriate optimization and improvement on its structure of the column was optimized appropriately and improved. The static and dynamic characteristics of column and sharpening precision of lathe tool not only were guaranteed, but also the design cycle was shortened the design cost was reduced.
