The performance of the roadheader was determined by the pick which was fragileparts of the machine. Nearly fifty percents of the failure was caused by wear and tear,which make self-sharpening to be a important and meaningful work to reduce the loseof wear and tear in the research and study of the pick. The pick rotated around the axiswas proposed in this paper which could slow down the wear failure and extend itsservice life.EBZ-160cantilever vertical axis roadheader was studied in this paper. Horizontalswing cutting was chosen as typical working situation because of its high energyconsumption. Equitions of motion and load were analyzed to find out the pick whichwas under the maximun load. The loading data of the self-sharpening structure was gotby the axial and radial stress curve which were figured explicit dynamic analysis byANSYS/LS-DYNA.With the analysis that had been done up in the paper and the specific requirments,the self-sharpening structure of the pick was proposed. The pick was fixed to the rotatedteeth while double layer-teeth was applied in the rotating equipment. Besides that, thecorresponding standard parts were chosen according to the structure while dust sealstructure and compression spring were designed to finish the virtual assembly.Force load was converted to displacement load as intermediate condition in theexplicit dynamic analysis of that equipment, because the rotating teeth cannot rotatealong the slope of the teeth. The rotating equipment and the pick box structure wereimproved by this analysis. And the reversible of that equipment was also verified bymotion simulation.
