Spinning technology attracts more and more attention in the development of the national economy because of its unique advantages. At present, the rotating cylinder which is the key components of the domestic hot spinning machine has lots of shortages, so it still dependents on foreign imports. In this paper, the author designed an rotating cylinder and optimized it with the virtual prototyping technology to meet the technics requirement of the spinning machine.Virtual Prototype Technology can be used to establish digital simulation model of physical prototype and finish the performance test and evaluation on the computer based on CAD technology. Firstly, the basic machinery structure of the rotating cylinder was designed based on the technics requirement and a three-dimensional solid model was established by using the three-dimensional software Solid Works and the kinematics was analysised by the Solid Works Motion. Secondly, the cloud chart of stress-strain and deformation was obtained with the stress analysis statics of the finite element analysis software ANSYS, to verify the safety performance of the rotating cylinder; the six-order modal cloud chart was gained with the modal analysis of the finite element analysis software ANSYS, to get the vibration characteristics of this rotating cylinder. Thirdly, the floating ring seal was successfully applied in the rotary seal on this rotating cylinder, then the hight of the annular gap was defined with the simulation by using the flow field simulation software FLUENT,and the best height of the floating ring seal seal gap was acquired. Finally, the test station of this rotating cylinder was designed, including the hydraulic system and the mechanical system,.Then, this rotating cylinder was test on the test station.The test results that met the expectations of the process requirements, verifying the correctness and practicality of this designed rotating cylinder.The whole developing process showed that the virtual prototyping technology could speed up risk-free conversion of virtual prototype to physical prototype, and it shortens the design cycle and reduces design risk.
