Cold drawn steel mold as a core component of cold drawn steel works is affected by complex forces and plastic deformation exothermic when the tube goes through severe plastic deformation, which leading to enormous consumption of the cold drawn steel mold. Cold drawn steel mold as the easy consumption part during cold drawn steel production has huge impacts on the production, quality, consumption and costs of the produced cold drawn steel. Therefore, the sustainable development of cold drawn steel industry, the reduction of the wear and tear of the cold drawn steel mold, the remanufacturing repair of the wear failed mold and the extension of the life of the mold have became the most important issues to relevant domestic and international manufacturers and research institutes. This article focuses on the analysis of the failure and remanufacturing repair of the cold drawn steel mold from the perspective of numerical simulation and experimental study. The main contents are as follows:DEFORM numerical simulation software is used to simulate and analyze the tube drawing process in order to seek the temperature field and stress field in the cold drawing process. The distribution and changes of cold drawing process of drawing force, the mold temperature, mold stress, the amount of die wear and other simulation results are studied. Thus we can get the main reason of the mold failure, form and location of the failure, which can supply the research foundation for the repair and remanufacturing of the cold drawn steel mold.According to the design principles of the cladding alloy powder and the property of the mold material, we designed two kinds of nickel-based alloy powder composite M-1and M-2 as remanufacturing repair powder to the wear failed cold drawn steel mold, also analysis the effect of the control method of cladding.The designed cladding alloy powders were carried out laser cladding and plasma cladding experiments on the cut substrate test panels, respectively. And, the appropriate laser and plasma cladding process parameters were based on cladding experiences and powder characteristics and equipment property. We observed the phenomenon of the cladding process, and performed comparative analysis on the heat affect of laser cladding and plasma cladding.Micro-hardness, tensile properties, impact toughness, comparative tribological performance test and microstructure observation are preformed on the four kinds of cladding layer which are obtained from cladding experiments. Through comparison and analysis of the experimental results, we found that the mechanical properties and wear resistance of the cladding layer which made by cladding alloy powder M-1 complex is the best, besides, the cladding layer and the substrate has a good metallurgical bond. The cladding layer meets the requirements of re-manufacturing repair cold drawn steel mold.Remanufacturing repair practices were preformed on failed cold drawn steel mold, no shrinkage cracks and other defects were found by macroscopic observation and non-destructive testing of the cladding layer, which further validates the feasibility of repairing the cold drawn steel mold by laser cladding M-1 complex alloy powder.
