Hydrophobic association water-soluble polymers (HAWP for short) perform special characteristics against the general water-soluble polymers. However, the performance of HAWP solution is very sensitive to surfactant. Handing the rules of the interaction between HAWP and surfactants is an important thing concerning to the development of HAWP. So, the interaction between HAWP and surfactants was determined as the purpose of this dissertation work.Model HAWP and contrastive model polymers were synthesized by free radical copolymerization. The molecule structure of those polymers was characterized. The surface tension measurements indicated that the HAWP has a little surface activity. The addition of HAWP leaded the surface tension of mixture solutions to a higher value than pure surfactants solutions. The more the hydrophobic group contained in HAWP, the greater the influence made on the mixture solutions. It's the same to the HAWP concentration in the mixture solutions. When HAWP was added in, the shape of the electric conductivity curves of the SDBS solutions was not changed obviously. This proved that the adsorption of the surfactants on the HAWP is a un-cooperation and continuous process. The more the hydrophobic group contained in HAWP, the smaller the slope was. It's the same to the concentration of HAWP in the mixture solutions. This indicated that more surfactant was adsorbed at the same concentration of surfactants, and the adsorption was correlative to the hydrophobic group in the HAWP.It is discovered that the adsorptive capacity of surfactants on HAWP was directly proportional to the concentration of surfactants. Furthermore, more SDBS was adsorbed than Orr-10 at the same conditions. This proved the adsorption principle was determined by the hydrophobic interaction between surfactants and HAWP, but the strength was affected by the electric charge of each other. The fact that the more hydrophobic group contained in HAWP, the more surfactants adsorbed indicated that thisadsorption was correlative to the hydrophobic group on HAWP.The viscosity of HAWP solutions increases sharply with concentration. At the same time, the HAWP solutions appeared strong flow stress and obvious shear thinning phenomenon. The polyacrylamide solution viscosity is not influenced by the surfactant obviously. But the apparent viscosity of HAWP solution increases when concentration of surfactant raises up, after a certain surfactant concentration, the apparent viscosity starts to drop with surfactant concentration. This phenomenon correlates with the content of hydrophobic group in the polymer chains completely. The higher the content is, the sharper this effect appears. It is proved that the adsorption principle was determined by the hydrophobic interaction between surfactants and HAWP, and the strength was affected by the electricity interaction between each other.
