A new styrene acrylic emulsion (SAE) as surface sizing agent were synthesized by emulsion polymerisation, the effect of synthetic technique on properties of copolymers were discussed, and industrial experiment and application were completed. The results show that properties of this product match BASF whose cost is higher than ours. Our main task is as follows:1. The process of research and application in surface sizing technique and sizing agent in the world were introduced.2. A new type SAE sizing agent were synthesized and its properties were measured and characterized.3.The effects of synthetic technique on properties of copolymers were discussed, and the optimum reaction conditions were found as follows: (1). Monomers and their ratio: styrene 35%-40%; butyl acrylate 15%-18%;methyl methacrylate 25%-30%; 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate 15%-18%;acrylic acid 2%-5%. (2). Emulsif iers, whose consumption amount is 2. 2-2. 6% of emulsion totalamount, are complex substance of anionic surfactant and non-ionicsurfactant agents.(3). Buffer agent, NaHC03, retains the pH scale of 10 in reaction system. (4). Reaction temperature ranges from 75-85C. (B). Reaction time duration is about 4 hs. (6). Semi-continual free radical emulsion polymerisation technique wereused.4. Industrial experiment with optimum reaction technique conditions were completed.5. Industrial product were applied in several large paper-making plant, result.shows :(1). This product can improve paper surface strength, lessen tinting,increase degree of sizing and smoothness, lengthening breaking length of paper. In the same condition, the basis weight is increasedfrom 60 g/m2 to 62. 1 g/m2, the tensile strength is from 1. 10m/s, 1. 38 m/s to 1. 68m/s, 2. lOm/s, the transverse fold resistance is from 12 times to 16 times, the breaking length of paper is from 2767m to 2812m, the hygroscopicity(Cobb) is from 20 g/m2 to 17g/m2 (2) It gets the same result of the surface intensity of paper using ourproduction 3.0kg/t correspond to DS-400 produced by BASF 3. 3kg/t .The potential application is immense in the market, because theproduction of DS-400(25%) is 14000RMBA in our coutry and the priceof raw material is less than 5000RMB/t.
