This paper focus on the effects of main surface sizing agents on paper physical, inkjet and laser printing properties and adjust mixing ratios of the surface sizing agents with starch. Ultimately we find the suitable agents and mixing ratios for inkjet and laser so that the digital color printing papers have low-cost, multifunctional and other value-added properties.The polymer type surface sizing agents represented by SMA mixed with starch achieved best paper physical properties as followed:when the ratio was15:85, the opacity increased by2.33%, and roughness reduced by37.16%. When the ratio was20:80, the CMYK solid density of ink-jet printing respectively increased by39.05%,22.52%,39.08%, and12.11%. While the ratio was15:85, it had the best performance in shadow. The proportion of black dots was about94.87%and it increased by1.23%. The line edges were smooth and had perfect clarity. Meanwhile, on the laser printing, when the ratio was20:80, the gray-scale tone in50%-90%density, the dark gray tone density respectively increased by29.75%,43.54%,46.70%,30.66%, and24.98%. When the ratio was15:85, the black dot percentage in laser printing had a slow growth and finally had a steady tendency. In summary, when the ratio was15:85, SMA type surface sizing agent mixed with starch had the best ink-jet and laser printer performances.The emulsion type surface sizing agents represented by anionic and cationic SAE mixed with starch achieved best paper physical properties as followed:when the ratio was4:8, the opacity increased by4%with anionic SAE400DS, while the ratio was3:8, the roughness fell by31.71%, and the permeability decreased by25.75%. But cationic SAE7305had the slightly reduce on paper permeability. On paper water resistance, the SAE had good performance. When the ratio was4:8, SAE400DS made the Cobb value decreased by47.52%, while the ratio was5:8; SAE7305made the Cobb value decreased by29.32%. SAE had the best performance in shadow of the inkjet printing, respectively, in70%gray scale, SAE400DS increased color density by48.69%and SAE7305was46.07%. When the ratio was3:8, anionic SAE400DS with starch was increased by2.37%on the dots resolution of ink-jet printing. Meanwhile, on laser printing, anionic SAE400DS made CMYK density had the most significant increased by13.42%,14.84%,16.93%, and20.82%; cationic SAE7305were12.49%,5.90%,13.58%, and14.71%. When the ratio was3:8, the anionic SAE400DS made the most increase rate by41.70%and cationic SAE7305by34.38%in70%gray scale of laser printer. The anionic SAE400DS enhanced the clarity and smoothness on ink dots of laser printing than SAE7305. The best ratio with starch was3:8.In summary, polymer SMA type surface sizing agent with good film-forming macromolecular properties with starch achieved the best results on inkjet and laser printing. Emulsion type SAE surface sizing agent, especially the anionic SAE400DS, combined easily with cationic starch. And it had good performance on inkjet and laser printing. The best mix ratios of two kinds of surface sizing agents with starch were3:8and15:85.
