The synthesis of tripodal ligands and their complexation properties are of considerable current interest. The attachment of three flexible, donor-atom-contai ning chains to a framework leads to tripodals, which can form complexes with many cations, such as alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, and transition metal cations. Furthermore, tripodal ligands and their complexes represent excellent capability and fine application prospect in many aspects, such as coordination chemistry, electrochemistry, medicine, catalytic chemistry, biochemistry, and supramolecular chemistry. Studies on the synthesis and properties of new tripodal compounds are of great value for mimicking bioprocess and researching the application in other fields. In this paper, we synthesized a series of new tripodal schiff base compounds and their transition mental ion complexes. All of the tripodal schiff base ligands and their complexes were characterized. The antibacterial activities of them were also studied.1. Six kinds of tripodal schiff base ligands were prepared by using the triethanolamine, 2-aminoethanethiol hydrochloride, 2-aminothiophenol as materials. The synthesis of the tripodal schiff base compounds (4a-4f) are shown as follows:Tris(2-chloroethyl)amine hydrochloride (1) was obtained by the reaction of triethanolamine with SOCl2 at room tempreture. The reaction of tris(2-chloroethyl)amine hydrochloride(1) with 2-aminoethanethiol hydrochloride or 2-aminothio phenol gave tris{[2-(2-aminophenyl)thio]ethyl}amine (2) and tris{[2-(2-aminoethyl)thio]ethyl}amine(3) in the presence of NaOBun. In the synthesis of (4a-4f), the amine (2) and (3) was condensed with different aldehydes in the mixed solvent of CHCl2 and C2H5OH.The six tripodal schiff base compounds (4a-4f) are new compounds which are not reported before. The structures proposed for the new tripodal schiff base compounds are consistent with the data obtained from their EA, IR, UV and 1H NMR spectra.
