At present, polyvinyl alcohol size (PVA), polyacrylic size and starch size are the three main sizes in the sizing market. Because PVA size can't be biodegraded and can bring serious environmental problems; polyacrylic size has serious re-adherence; starch size has poor pasting performance and instable viscosity, it is urgent to develop a kind of size which should be cheap and biodegradable.In this paper, aiming to solve these problems and meet the development requirement, firstly a series of grafted starch sizing agent with good pasting and excellent sizing performance were synthesized utilizing the cheap mealie starch as the reactants. By comparison, one starch size with low viscosity was selected, which had good desizing property and stable viscosity, and it was a good green size with bright future. Secondly, on the basis of polyacrylic size, a kind of novel emulsion copolymer sizing agent was prepared by polyacrylic means of emulsion copolymerization in order to improve the size's re-adherence and stability, which had the solid content of 40% and low viscosity and was thermally stable. Thirdly, a kind of newly water-soluble polyester sizing agent was synthesized by the process of ester exchange, estrification and polycondensation reactions. The results showed the polyester size had stable viscosity and excellent film-formation property, thus it was a good size for T/C fiber. At last, a kind of mixed sizes was presented to reach the satisfied results of high density and low viscosity. Through large numbers of experiments, the mixed sizes revealed the stable viscosity and excellent sizing properties, which could probably replace the PVA size in future.
