In this paper, one cationic monomer N, N-dimethyl, N- benzyl, N-propyleneamido ammonium chloride(DBPMA) was systhesized from acrylic acid, thoinly chloride, ethanol dimethylamine through acylation, esterification and quatemization. The structure of the cationic monomer was characterized by IR, 1HNMR and mass spec- trum. The optimal synthetic route of DBPMA was made by studying the reaction temperature, the ratio of raw material and solvent and so on.The copolymer of P(DBPMA/AM) was prepared by the cationic monomer obtained above and acrylamide. And the effect on flocculation of the copolymer was studied by the reaction time, the ratio of raw material, polymerization temperature and concen- tration of initiator. Results show, the optimal route of polymerization under K2S2O8 as initiator was temperature 60℃, reaction time 3h and mole ratio n(cationic mono- mer ): n(Acrylamide) =1:6. The cationic degree of the copolymer is 8.13%,and mole- cular weight is 4.77×107. Experimental results indicate that P(DBPMA/AM) has great effect on flocculation of kaolin suspension samples or activated sludge, and the rate of sediment was fast and big.
