This paper analyzes the related factors of hydrodynamics of ship lift chamberunder various working conditions of the tumble gate and several dimensionless functions are established according to the π theorem. Extensive physical model testsare conducted to investigate the wave height and the maximumlongitudinal hawser force in the chamber Empirical formulas to calculate thewave height when no ship exists in the chamber are derived. Theapparent influence of depth-to-width at on the maximum/minimum wave height isfound in the experiment for the first time. The results show that due to the co-influenceof the shallow water and side wall of the restricted water, there is a criticaI depth-to-width ratio when the wave height reaches the maximum/minimum value. The block-effect of the ship is studied when the ship is moored in the chamber. The results show that the block-effect of the ship is conditional on the appropriate blockratio, and this block ratio can be used to define the restricted water.Theoretical analysis is carried out to investigate the longitudinal hawser force ofthe ship in the chamber The mathematical model to calculate the longitudinal hawserforce is developed, and the theoretical approximate result is acquired according to thesimplified model.
