This paper introduces the development situations of arch bridges abroad and home firstly, and point out that the stone arch bridge is a kind of good type of bridge in some regions of china. There are many stone arch bridges in china, especially stone arch bridges that have big or huge span. As design and calculation of arch bridges usually adopts the current methods, this paper introduces theory and process of current methods, reviews the development of calculation methods of arch bridges, and points out that current methods have some defects in design of arch bridges that have big span. Secondly, this paper introduces the theory to calculate arch bridges by finite element method, element stiffness matrix and methods to calculate arch bridges that have big span; and put forwards a method to analyze the whole of arch bridges by integral calculation based on the theory of structural mechanics. At last, referring to the model test of Danhe big bridge, this paper calculates arch bridges by the methods that have been mentioned above, analyzes and compares the results of every kind of methods, and put forwards superficial opinion to design of bridges that have big span.
