Excitation system is an important part of synchronous generator. And it affects the operating characteristics of generator and power system directly. This paper discusses a new type microcomputer excitation regulator based on micro-controller 87C196KD and Programmable System Device PSD5O1. To make the regulator have high operating reliable, the design adopts two- channel architecture i.e. it is consist of two completely identical and independent channels. The paper describe the hardware of the system, introduces the design of center control unit based on PSD and the research and application of the new type MPS (Micro-port Saver) E2PROM in details. In this paper it also introduces the software architecture of system. The programs adopt C language and use module design methods. The paper discusses several limitation functions, the design of serial commination program and the high precision PID operation. The regulator have AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator), FCR (Field Current Regulator), and PFR (Power Factor Regulator) modes. Each mode can be changed over to another mode. The excitation system based on 817C196KD and PSD has a simple hardware and strong ability to resist the interference and high control precision. It has high practical value.
