Shaanxi Province, Local Road Construction Material Selection Study

The design and component of construction material is one of key technologies in the field of highway construction. In additional of the constrains of natural geographic environment and the feature of environment for the selection of materials in the concerned region, it is still depends on the plan of highway planning and policies on the utilization of construction material resources made by the concerned government sector and analysis on material resource during the period of highway construction and design by the contractors. The article describes the principles of defining the survey region in Shaanxi, and the investigation index for the construction materials, while surveying and studying the natural geographical and environment characteristics. Based on above mentions, it is proposed to set up a computer management information system on construction material resource in Shaanxi. The proposed system was used to analyze the resource of construction materials distributed in Shaanxi, and the sources of materials along the existing high-class highways in Shaanxi province. Afterwards, the conclusion is extended to analyze the resource of regional material, then to include the whole province in accordance with the administrative regions and natural geographic environment. The approach from the point to region, then to province is very advantage to finalized the conclusion on local material resource and provide relative proposal. On the basis of above analysis, the article also lists the following aspects which bring some influence to the selection of road construction materials: 1. All of the road standards, construction features, geographic characteristics, material distribution and structure categories will produce some impacts; 2. Following the development in road network, its construction and maintenance make different needs at four levels: artery trunk highway, secondary truck highway, existing national & provincial roads, and existing county, township and village roads. 3. The typical pavement structure in Shaanxi needs various kinds of materials and different quality. Sum up, the article works up the principle of type selection on local road construction materials, and concludes the technology on how to select construction material in Shaanxi, and provides some suggestion.
