Overhead Traveling Cranes are widely used in many fields of the economic construction, and have been formed into many series. Along with the development of economy, the consumers require them have higher qualities. But today almost all the designs of Overhead Traveling Crane are completed by hand and there are great disparities between home and abroad in many aspects such as the design ability, the products' scales and qualities. To increase the level and the efficiency of our design and change the structures of nowadays cranes, this paper presents a new method to digitize the design of Overhead Traveling Crane. With reference to the structure of the foreign new type Overhead Traveling Crane, structure design is done and a design system of new type of Overhead Traveling Crane is developed, which is designed in AutoCAD 2002 software environment by VBA based on ActiveX Automation.According to the parameters inputted by consumers such as lifting load, lifting height, lifting speed, span, work class, wheel load and type of end-carriage joint, the system can optimize the section dimension of main girders and end girders automatically and check out the intensity, the rigidity and the stability of the main girders and end girders. In the end, the component drawings of the main girders, the end girders and the bridge frame are drawn and the results are saved in the data-base which can be used next time. The emphases in the paper are the global design of the system, building system database, designing user interfaces and drawing parameterized.The study in this paper has practical meaning in increasing the design level and the design efficiency of Overhead Traveling Crane, in applying CAD/CAM technology, and in improving the ability of prompt reflection to the market and competition of enterprises.
