Currently, "Tectonics" is becoming the hottest topic in the Chinese architectural field as a consequence of the absence of architectural ontology in our theory studies. With preliminary development of "Tectonics" studies in China, a common understanding is forming amongst many Chinese architects about "building" being more close to Architecture itself than so-call architectures. Influenced by this kind of opinion, I selected a building that was under construction in Dali as the object of my research, and aimed at starting a discussion on the essence of architectural form. The first chapter of the thesis is an objective description of the construction process, without fictions and individual judgments. And two questions are raised at the end of the chapter, which 1 found when I was observing and recording on the construction site, namely if the form from construction logic is the same as the form of architecture or not? Why isn't the physical process identical with the imitated process on the computer? The answers to the above questions contribute to the content of the second and third chapters. In the second chapter, a general process of construction "material -* element -* construction ?form" is compressed from the physical process. Then I respectively analyze the relationship between construction logic and architectural form from three sections "material -* form", "element ?form", "construction ?form". But with further analysis, 1 recognized that the relationship between construction logic and form was not like my anticipated completely logical cause and effect. Here, logic can't explain all forms, sometimes architectural forms are beyond explanations provided by logical reasoning of construction. But it's possible they can be allowed by another reasoning, and be existent. This doubt made me compare the craftsmen's experience (in this specific case) with the subject of Architecture. Although from the surface there are no very strict boundaries, the differences between conservative craftsman's experience and Architecture are many and vast. By analyzing the fundamental architectural questions of architecture, I became aware that the meaning of Architecture still enlightens our direction, just as we thought it became dim in our soul because of ignorance. It urged me to the ontology's opposite polarity, namely the representational angle on "Tectonics", and again I examined the works of three architects in the second chapter. Where forms can't be explained with logical reasoning of construction it can still be allowed because of the reasonableness of its expression. Rejecting "formalism" doesn't mean architects should give up expression. Nothing wrong with Representation in itself, the key is what and how we try to express. In the last chapter, I gave a macroscopic description of the development of "Tectonics" in contemporary Chinese architecture, and an analysis on the hot issue of "Tectonics" in contemporary Chinese architecture. Indeed, there are some traps in the development, which can result in "Tectonics" not being able to exert it's theory's power, and instead just become a popular technic topic. But these traps also inspiredme to give some suggestions on the development of "Tectonics" in the future Chinese architecture. Linking to the development of Yunnan regional Architecture, I thought "Tectonics" is beneficial as a supplement to architectural ontological studies in the regionality studies. Face to the developing trend, I propose some suggestions in "how to bring fresh air to the stale corridors of the regionality architecture design".
