In this paper, we represent a design project for the implementation of portable Digital Storage Oscilloscope (DSO) based on an architecture built by DSP (Digital Signal Processor) and FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array). After a brief discussion about the DSO theories and its system construction, we go on with the hardware circuit designs of DSO, namely, anologe channel, FPGA, DSP, A/D converter, LCD. The main part of this paper focus on the design of the peripheral controller, which is implemented by FPGA and almost includes all of the digital circuits of the DSO. The peripheral controller consists of frequency detector, data sample controller, FIFO, LCD driver and the interface circuit between DSP and FPGA. For all these parts, we launch detailed research on their algorithms, hardware circuit architectures and timing requirements. Moreover, we offer a self-contained plan for the testing of these circuits. The controller can work hormonally with the other parts of our DSO, both the hardware and the software. The proposed project that using the duel-port RAM inner FPGA as data buffer has greatly simplified the design process and enhanced the system performance. The improved design of FIFO in respect of Multi-Asynchronous Clock Designs acquires perfect working performance. Using FPGA to implement the digital circuits of a system provides a good example for other designs of portable devices.
