Traditional settlement is living carrier of dwelling and production, and it is also the basic sell of social structure and the development of cities. It has its value of research which spreads widely and deposits deeply in Chinese traditional cultural history, and made up the civilization of China ,and roots the memory of the developing of cities and regional culture.As the part of Chinese traditional settlements, the traditional settlements of southern Hunan show their own characteristics through their particular geographic environment and culture. They have special value of research and meaning from options, space structure levels, technical processing to aesthetics, geographic environment, folk culture and regional culture. After a mass of fieldwork and survey, with abundant photograph information, this thesis attempts to start with the relationship between tradition, area and settlements, then make a study to settlement layout, space structure level, public space analyses, and the influence of settlements by traditional culture and regional environment, then take measures to protection and developing.On the one hand, the thesis want to learn comprehensively the relations between layout and economy, culture, technology through the systematic research of layout of the settlement; On the other hand, the thesis also want to attach importance and usage to settlements that use the environment, coordinate the environment and protect the ecosystem, and put forward a new thinking of sustainable development in architectural design. At the end the author raise its own view of settlement's protection and development in connection with current situation.
