One important problem in information society is "information explosion". The data compression encoding is an effective way to solve this problem. Thus, it ranks high among the research subjects of information science. Since its naissance, MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) encoding & decoding standard acquires rapid development. With the development of multimedia system and family cinema system products, MPEG standard produces a far influence to all of AV marketplace. On the other hand, today, car industry is a large fresh support industry in China. So,as the combination of the AV electron industry and car industry, car electron products are on a rapid development stage. It will be a remarkable growth spot in automobile domain in China and even in the world. Many manufacturers aim at this vast market of car audio-video electron system. This research lodges a passive MPEG-1 decoder, which can upgrade car CD playing systems to car VCD playing systems. This MPEG-1 decoder system has the characteristics of easy installing, economy and trustiness; except for car AV playing system, it can be used at ISO/IEC11172 standard network video transport decode system, for example, video meeting & video watch. Firstly, the thesis expounds the compressing and encoding technology of the video & audio in MPEG-1 standard, and discusses the format of MPEG-1 data, and the way of error-rectifying on digital disc playing system. Afterwards, it details design of both the hardware and software of MPEG-1decoder. The hardware design is mostly based on a decode chip ESS3890 and a DSP chip M65827; the software design gives the software system framework, the system task control and system interrupt management, then lays particular stress on the communication of main encode chip and DSP & single-chip microcomputer, avoiding noise, human–machine interface, etc. At last part, it performs debugging and aging experiment of system,and gets the result ——this MPEG-1 decoder system is good at stability, expansibility and price performance ratio.
