This paper presents the cam mechanism of the BEJ tobacco packing machines from Yunnan Tobacco Machinery Factory. The design simulation and data analysis of traditional and modern method for the cam mechanism of tobacco packing machines are studied respectively. A simplified mechanism is attained using the theory of Multi-Rigid-Body System Dynamics(MRBSD),and the complete kinematic and dynamic differential equation groups are set up to make a mathematical model of Cartesian MRBSD, whose solutions are gained using the software of MATLAB 6. 5. And the 3-D model of the mechanism is built and virtual assembly is completed using the software of Unigraphics NX 2.0, then the virtual prototype (VP) of the mechanism is made using the module of UG Motion. Kinematic and dynamic analysis are conducted on the cam and the pushing board. The results are almost same using both the methods, which provide basis for cam optimization and improvements. The research conducted in this paper shows that, VP technology using computers can increase the design efficiency while decreasing the cost of physical prototype, and make our research more practical. And the Motion module of UG also provides us a new method for cam optimal design.
