As a new electromagnetic material, left-handed meta-material (LHM), with simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability, has attracted lots of interests among the researchers around the world. Such distinct constitutive parameters have brought the medium several quite unique electromagnetic properties, such as negative refraction, reversed Doppler effect, reversed Cerenkov radiation, etc. For the realized anisotropic LHM, the researches on its electromagnetic characteristics will lead to a better interpretation of many phenomena observed in the experiments, which is different from the ones concluded from the isotropic media. Based on the anisotropic EM theory, the reflection and refraction on the boundary of the one-dimensional (1D) LHM have been studied in this thesis. The main works focus on1. For the half-space 1D LHM with its principal axis with negative permittivity perpendicular to the plane of incidence, the TE polarized incident plane wave could have total transmission on the boundary in the two cases when the principal axis with negative permeability in the plane of incidence is normal or parallel to the interface. The conditions for this phenomenon have been given in the thesis.2. The wave reflection and refraction on the boundary between a normal media and a 1DLHM, whose dispersion relation is with a hyperbolic k-surface, are studied. In a special case when the boundary is perpendicular to one asymptotic line of the hyperbola, phase matching can not be achieved unless the 1DLHM is regarded intrinsically lossy. After introducing a small loss factor to the 1DLHM, a reasonable solution for the phase matching is obtained. According to the analytical result, a wave confined to a thin layer near the boundary is found, which can be excited on the boundary as a reflected wave or a refracted wave and attenuates drastically away from the boundary inside the 1DLHM in both cases.3. The transmission of a Gaussian beam passing through a slab made of a 1D LHM is studied. The analytical solution of the electric and the magneticfields inside and outside the slab are given. The calculation of the power flow of the beam predicts that in the negative pass band of the ID LHM, there exist different directions of lateral displacements. Such phenomenon is further verified by experiment.
