Yantai, a "coastal defence outpost" of inland regions in the Ming Dynasty, has gradually developed into a progressively advancing coastal city. The great changes of the city formation are resulted from the mode of production, productive forces and marine culture that develop around the sea and that are beyond the land. It is the inevitable result of historical development.Urban texture, as the relatively deep material content of city formation, is the direct witness to the history of a city. In the light of gradual progress of Yantai urban texture and interpretation of its cultural connotation, this essay intends to interpret the course of urban transformation under the influence of marine culture and explore the future of urban development, on the basis of linking different historical stages of the city. Therefore, this easy divides the history of Yantai city into three stages — its origin, formation and development. This easy begins with accounting different incidents (ban on maritime trade or intercourse with foreign countries; opening wharf; the open policy) which show the different attitudes towards marine culture in different historical stages and illustrates different expressions to the sea, the geographical conditions, in different social environment and presentations of the function of the setup of typical urban texture (inland square city; offshore compound houses; coastal high buildings). Then this easy expounds the deep spiritual cultural connotation of the abstract formation of urban texture and elaborates the historical trend of Yantai city.Thereafter, in order to make the city develop in the favorable orientation in the future, this essay illustrates the improper presentation (costal high buildings) of powerful marine culture in the development stages of Yantai city and examines closely again the spread of marine culture as exotic culture entering directly in different powerful forms with reference to the successful spreading experience of exotic culture, first alike then different, in history. Then this essay points out that in dealing with the relations between nature and human beings, when absorbing marine culture, we should first take the similar aspects into consideration, that is, the similarity of views on the harmony of nature and human beings between marine culture (Western culture) and traditional Chinese culture, and then take the other different aspects which complement the traditional culture into consideration. Finally this essay concludes that it presents the best interpretation of the above that the city is developing towards the goal of "incorporating things of diverse nature, being moderate and tender" which is emphasized in the advancing coastal city and in recent years the city is developing towards the good trend of paying attention to the people's livelihood and humanist spirit. Meanwhile this essay also points out that the harmony between nature and human beings should be regarded as the basis of facing the powerful marine culture in the city development.
