From the viewpoint of modern logistic concept, the container ship's stowage system shall meet the requirements of two sides, one of which is that, as for the system's internal requirements, it shall not only ensure the ship's safety, the company's profit and the cargo in good condition but also have the features of reasonable cargo flow, perfect functions, convenient use and reliable procedures, the other of which is that, as for the management of supply chain, the container ship's stowage as one of the logistic nodes shall offer active and flexible service so as to exert its greatest influence on the information, automation and intellectualization of the logistic development. This paper focuses on how the container ship's stowage meets those requirements.First of all, from the container ship's stowage system itself, this paper discusses its characteristics, requirements and procedures and studies the main objectives of stowage. As to the ship's stability, the target model with the optimum initial stability value is studied, on the basis of which this paper argues that the key to achieve the goal of optimizing the container ship's stowage is the problems concerning ship's stability, longitudinal strength, drafts and stowage capability.Secondly, this paper focuses on how to realize the optimization objectives of container ships. According to characteristics of different objectives, different ways shall be adopted. With respect to the local strength, it shall be dealt that the vertical total load on the different parts of the container shall not exceed the allowance on the deck or hold bottom, which can be guaranteed by the optimization model of longitudinal force. In order to optimize the longitudinal force and stability, the theory of linear programming is applied. Taking the optimum drafts as the original data, based on certain ship's particulars, the model of calculating ship's total longitudinal Bending Moment ( BM ) is established. With the smallest total longitudinal Bending Moment (BM) as the objective function, the optimum longitudinal distribution of the container weights is obtained, and then according to the optimum stability objective, with the vertical weight moment of every row of containers as the objective function, the vertical distribution of the containers is obtained, that is, the distribution of container weights in every row, tier and bay. So far, the optimum model of stowage has been established.Lastly, with respects to the problem that the box selection in the stowage on board the container ship and the quay still requires human experience and knowledge, this paper puts forward the container ship's automated stowage expert system based on the knowledge inference technique, which analyzes the stowage procedure and divides the system objectives by steps to determine the model adopted and design several functional modules throughstructural design ways.In the research of container ship's stowage in the modern logistic supply chain, there are two problems to solve: one is what role this link of supply chain shall play and the other is how to play this role. This paper, guided by the theory of modern logistic supply chain management, analyzes the advantages of setting up the container stowage system in the traditional logistic systems. To realize the functions of container stowage system in the modern logistic management, the container stowage information system must be established, which is also the core of modern logistics, the component of logistic management information system. After analyzing the necessity and practicality of constructing container stowage information system, this paper makes a research on the model design of the information system.
