Rapid hydraulic tamper, compared with traditional tamper, bring advantages such as higher impact energy, greater effect depth and higher control flexibility. It can be applied to not only common plane compaction but inclined plane compaction. Furthermore, its impact energy can be adjusted to adapt for different subgrade.In this paper, after analyzing working principles of hydraulic tamper, a program is established that the tamper should cooperate with a loader. Then aimed at improving the working efficiency, its hydraulic circuit is designed. According to different design criteria, the structure parameters such as cylinders, accumulators' types and other hydraulic components are designed. According to the analysis of the electric control system of tamper, considering that the controlled object has a great speed and intense shock, the non-contact proximity switch is adopted to control the arise and fall of the hammer ram. Its mathematical model is built and the working process is simulated by the simulation software-AMESim. The simulated results is verified with the tested data. The field test and indoor test validated that: a corresponding relation exists between the compactness of soil and the surface sedimentation. According to the results of check experiment, rapid hydraulic tamper has a greater compact depth and is more fit for clay soils compaction.
