Alaer Basin, located in the northwest of Caidam Basin called as Pleasure Basin, is the industrial bases for petroleum, natural gas, saline resources, and asbestos, etc. Precious underground water ensures the social and economic development, especially for those industries mentioned above. Qinghai petroleum department has started to carry out geological work in desolate and uninhabited Alaer Basin since 1950s and develop and utilize the artesian water of high pressure. However, special and technical hydro-geological prospecting and exploration has never been conducted on water resources in the basin. Furthermore, the pressure of head of artesian water appears to be very high (50-60m high over the ground) with large water yield and the shallow upper layer is salty water. Consequently, well digging and completion are so difficult. Irrational exploitation is to result in a series of environmental hydrogeological problems, such as declining of regional groundwater elevation, salinization of deep freshwater resource, exhaustion of utilizable resources. Therefore, it's very necessary to carry on research on occurrence characteristics of artesian water of high pressure in Alaer Basin as well as resources evaluation with practical and feasible methods. Eventually, rational exploitation quantity and measures can be put forward to provide local departments for reference. The author starts with conditions of regional geology & hydrogeology and analyzes the occurrence characteristics of artesian water in Alaer Basin. Furthermore, the present exploitation status is integrated with information of 4 supply wells of 2004 aiming at production scale of 2.1 × 10~4m~3/d marked out in water head site so as to evaluate on natural replenishment of underground water, recharge of underground section, approved exploitation yield of water head site with the utilization of methods of water-balance, profile and exploitation test. In addition, transformation trend of water head is calculated along with the extension of time and techniques of drilling and well completion are also discussed in the article so as to provide reference for evaluation on underground water resources and drilling in the analogical regions.
