As for present boiler burning, it is not a big problem to keep boiler in safe operation. With reform of the electric power system, the power generation enterprises pay more attention to efficiency of boiler burning. Carbon content of fly ash is one of the important indicators of economy and technology in burning coal boiler of power plant. It indicates efficiency of coal burning in boiler. Thus, measuring carbon content of fly ash can help to know boiler burning state. Scientific research people have been looking for a measurement for a long time. It direct reflects state of boiler to help operator to adjust burning state timely. It not only means that boiler can keep health, but that fuel can be utilized effectively. In the past, the power plant usually used burning and weighing method to measure the carbon content of fly ash, causing that the result are several hours later than the boiler operating. It has little value on direct the boiler to adjust conditions in real time.This paper applied a new method to measure real-time carbon content of fly ash of boiler on line, and developed a microwave test system of flue type to determine the carbon content of fly ash. The system of flue type can avoid the deficiencies such as stopping up ash caused by the conventional system.The paper discussed a fundamental theory that microwave could be used to determine the carbon content. It designed a microwave measuring system and built a static and simulative apparatus. Furthermore, a large amount of experimental work was carried out and the feasibility of microwave measuring system was proved. Especially, a dynamic and compensatory project was discussed to revise a variety of signal source with environment temperature. A theoretical model on the concentration of fly ash was proposed. The concentration of ash was considered as the function of several parameters of the boiler in power plant. By acquiring these parameters, the paper can compute the concentration of fly ash which provided the theoretical basis of the measuring system. Moreover, two parameters'method getting rid of density is put forward as a supplement.
