Quanzhou Coastal Shihcuo Dwellings

Chinese traditional Dwelling is well-established and have a long history, and it stands at the East of the world by the unique Wooden Structure. But in QuanZhou, the historical city of South China, there remains lots of stone buildings ,which have been called the national treasure: The Luoyang bridge flies over the sea waves, and the natural moat changes the thoroughfare; The Anping bridge extends five miles endlessly, which named the longest bridge in the world; The Chinese mugwort Soviet Harp temple is compared to sky and water pavilion by its elegant carving; The double tower in Kaiyuan Temple stand upright into the skies, presenting the old city one hundred year vicissitudes; and the Chongwu old city guards the coastal territory, and with soldiers and citizen together building the whole copper wall and iron arm to protect the integrated land of our country.In Quanzhou , named " the realm of stone" long before, it is not only known as the well quality of the granite ,but also the addition of the extraordinary splendour to the architectural treasure in China by the large quantity of monuments made of granite. And as to an ordinary stone wall ,a simple stone road , an open stone house and a plain stone dwlling ,seems full of lively life, are all harmnous with the nature compliably under the chiseling and beating by the craftsman.The earliest tradional dwelling in the littoral of Quanzhou are the "Palace-style" Dwelling and Shoujinliao . It is shown that those are largely lie in Tang Dynasty and the Yanglou and Qilou became the familiar dwelling type from all over the village to the town in the Minguo period with the trend of "the West spread to the East". In the type of the Big-dwelling and Shoujinliao, granit are mainly used to the outdoors matting such as stone ,deep well ,backyard and steps, and used to the platform base, the base of column, the window and door and the base course, then trasfered to the stone carve and the docorate in "Taxiu". The Yanglou and Qilou is the nessary products of dwelling from bungalow to storied building. For the Quanzhou men who are good at using natual stone ,the Shuimending or concrete that are actually manmade stone(that is arc) abroad give the native peple more courage to use stone in large scale ,so that the potential of the natual stone can be fully played and the Stone dwelling can be broadly applied.The introduction of the Stone dwelling are seldom in all kinds of literature and the research of it is less and less. The Dwelling of Quanzhou has introduced the stone dwelling with limited words and plenty picitures. The graduate student named Chen Xiaoxiang in tsinghua university has discussed deeply the stone construction dwelling in HuiAn of QuanZhou. This thesis are based on that and have a systemic investigation and analyse , and try to provide and add some important things to the research of the dwelling in QuanZhou.The first chapter is the introductory that is the significance of the research and the dynamic of the science, the range and the way of the research. And it construct the cultural region of the stone dwelling in QuanZhou under the architectural history culture of QuanZhou.
