| QuanZhou city is famous for it history and culture in china. The traditional dwelling in QuanZhou has notable features and long-history origin. They are distinguished examples of resident architecture system in china. The thesis takes two kinds of fundamental type of traditional folk residence in QuanZhouthe palace-style?dwelling and houjinliao?dwelling as main study objects, analyses the profound idea and methods of spatial design in a simple way from the angle of geometric space and existent space, and with analogy design concept, the paper inquires into the extent and progress of creative thought of space in QuanZhou traditional residence when it is applied in modem architecture design.After on-the-spot prospecting, interview, surveying and drawing, and the analysis of blueprints and pictures, the author found that the layout and spatial constitution of traditional dwelling in QuanZhou contain both obvious common characteristics of quadrangle residence in ancient mid-China as well as rich regional features. They embodied mainly in: the low but high-density of general layout; the rigorous but orderly form of plan-organism; the open-to-internal and rich-layer of spatial prototype; the vivid ray?space that distributing widely in the architecture; orderly alleys extending in all directions. All of these features are results of interacting between traditional residence, natural condition and culture environment. They contain profound scientific nature, reasonable character and adaptability.The thesis then juxtaposes the traditional dwelling and modem architecture in rational attitude, study and generalizes the spatial prototype of these folk residences from several aspects. These can be generally divided into: the concept of niversal space?in layout; comprehensive spatial prototype (the blend of interior space, open-to-sky space and ray?space); definite spatial order, the equal-quality of interior space, etc. In order to transfer these design ideas to specific creative methods, the article analyses the methods of spatial design embodying in QuanZhou traditional residence further. They are changing entity into parts with the method of slicing the niversal space?to form the solid space of house and void space of courtyard; take courtyard as media to extend building, the utilizing of axis and the net-like of communication taking circle as mainstay, etc. these analysis hold the spatial concept of QuanZhou traditional residence from two aspects:pirit?and hysical form? By the analysis of these designing idea and methods, a bridge joint tradition with modern is erected.Basing on the understanding to the basic form of traditional dwelling in QuanZhou, the thesis takes the nalogy?design concept as a thought frame, and preliminarily inquires into the nalogy?design pattern of QuanZhou traditional dwelling. After analysis, the author considers that its fundamental mode is a quadrangle pattern made up of tree layers: interior space, open-to-sky space and ray?space.
