Professor Weh, from TU Braunschweig of Germany, presented transverse-flux motor topology concept in 1980s, which is significant to improve the torque density of the motor. In the middle of 1990s, with the rapid development of the relevant theory, analysis method and the materials, the transverse flux motor gradually became research hotspot. Much attention is focus upon on the transverse flux permanent magnet motor (TFPM) which efficiently combines the advantages of the transverse flux motor with the high torque density and the permanent magnet motor with the high efficiency. The research of this paper is about the transverse flux permanent magnet synchronous motor that is part of the national 863 program entitled "design and integration techniques of new types of permanent magnet motors"(research code: 2002AA324020). The aim of this paper is to bring the advantage of high torque density and high power density into full play and overcome the disadvantage of low power factor. Analyze and calculate the magnetic field of the transverse flux permanent magnet synchronous motor. Try to find out the reason of low power factor and bring forward the suggestion and corresponding method of improvement. Based on the above analysis a sample motor is made to testify the theory achievement trying to get better performance and technique target. In Chapter 1 the target and significance of the research on TFPM are presented, and the research level on this field at home and abroad is also given. In Chapter 2 the fundamental theory and characteristics of the TFPM are explained. The transverse flux motors are categorized into different kinds. The 3D FEM is very efficient and contemporary approach to an accurate computation of electromagnetic field, but the whole motor model is too complex and time-consuming. In Chapter 3, in order to reduce calculation time, only one of 20 pairs of poles model is analyzed. Based on the magnetic field calculation some parameters of the sample motor such as electromotive force with no load, leakage coefficient with no load and magnetic torque are calculated and influence on the performance by the change of the structure of the sample motor is also discussed. In Chapter 4, a new prototype TFPM is produced. The novel structure of the prototype TFPM will be described. Part of the prototype TFPM parameters will be shown. In Chapter 5, a preliminary practicality computer aided design(CAD) software is accomplished based on both Visual Basic and ANSYS, which can be used to optimize TFPM design. And more motors with better performance will be produced.
