Several common methods to study traffic capacity of signalized intersection both at home and abroad are introduced. Especially the methods to study traffic capacity recommended in City Road Design Standard of China and the average delay of vehicles put forward in HCM of America are mainly analyzed. On the basis of the methods and investigation, the designed capacity, the average delay and service level of Xiaozhai intersection in Xi'an city are received. The results show that the lane design and signal timing of Xiaozhai intersection didn't meet with the current traffic requirement. In order to improve the service level of the intersection, two updating schemes are put forward. By analyzing vehicle states at signalized intersection, such as arrival and running etc., the microscopic simulation models are built. The simulation system of signalized intersection is programmed by Visual C++ 6.0, which can effectively simulate traffic situation of intersection with different lane design and phase control. The result of simulation shows that the service level of updated Xiaozhai intersection is improved obviously. The developing simulation system can simulate several lane distribution and signal phase control and has certainly useful value.
