After researching synthetically on product conceptual design, product lifecycle management and existing product genetic theory, as well as on the advanced manufacture mode - Mass Customization(MC), a new method, Product Genetic Engineering(PGE), is proposed as one of the options resolving MC. Based on PGE, the work of this paper is processed.Based on the theories of Decomposition and Reconstruction of functional surface and growth design, the framework of theory and technology of product genetic engineering is elaborated, including the concept of the genome and product gene, gene growth, product genetic engineering and related innovative technology, establishment of a genetic database structure, the mapping model between the structure of the product to product functions. It is also extended to the entire product lifecycle, and developed the concepts of Product Lifecycle Genetic Engineering (PLCGE) and Product Gene Management (PGM).In the framework of PGE, two key issues is analyzed and resolved: research on product design requirement and the product family growth design.There are two key technology in the analysis of the requirement for product design and technology: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Quality Function Deployment (QFD). On the basis of that the concept and nature of requirement genes is researched, identifying the method in the framework of PGE. Further development of PGE lets a theoretical framework MC-PLCGE platform being proposed.Modeling of the product family, detailed analysis of different types of model definition and mapping product family, provide the operational development of technology, to achieve a more innovative, product family system concept is proposed. Finally, an innovative development environment is developed: growth product family design platform.Finally, combining with the platform DARFAD and collaborative design automation platform support, a product genetic engineering prototype system is developed. With the example solar water heaters, SWH products were demonstrated from requirement analysis, conceptual design, detailed design, technical design, production and management product family; through the distribution system and generating orders from the demonstration, demanding/cancelling, marketing, logistics, and other details of each stage of the product lifecycle. Through the study and running the prototype system, it is proved the feasibility and development prospects of PGE. The next task is to lay a sound basis for the theory and technology.
