Based on biology growth, the automatic conceptual design system — ACIS-DARFAD provides the growth evolutive mode. The start of growth design is product requirement prototype. Based on existent product and STEP neutral file, the data information of 3-D product is extracted from the STEP neutral file, the 3-D product model is reestablished with ACIS API function and is translated to the product structure model based on functional surface, and then requirement prototype is gained with converse design. This paper develops information integration system between automatic conceptual design system—ACIS-DARFAD and other CAD system.Object-oriented assembly model is established based on STEP. Firstly, The entities information of STEP files are mapped into corresponding classes in C++, all the classes are saved in a chain. Then, according to the object-oriented idea, many class structures used for product information model based on B-rep are built with C++ language, the data in the middle file is read and stored in the relevant class structure, accordingly the geometry and topology information is linked. Ultimately the 3-D product model is reestablished with ACIS API function and is shown under ACIS environment.Translating from ACIS geometry model to the product assembly model is completed based on functional surface. Firstly, based on ACIS data information, assembly relationships are automatically recognized according to the geometry information with width priority arithmetic. Secondly, according to recognized assembly relationships, part class and surface class of the ACIS geometry model are translated into part class and functional surface class of the product assembly model; relationships among parts and surfaces are appended into PartNet net structure, and in this way the product structure model is built. The growth design process is retrospect, and the recovery of the requirement prototype by the coupling between the function units is achieved, so that a practical design technique or approach from existing product to innovative product is provided.Finally, the functions, module setting, technologies and running environment of system are expatiated. With an example of strap transmission, the function of STEP back processor is validated. With an example of piston fixture, the translating of the product assembly model and the recovery process of the product prototype are illustrated in details, and conceptual structure prototype of product is gained. The correctness and rationality of the theory research and implementation of technology is validated.
