Before a new engine leaves factory, it should excise a period of running-in to improve contact conditions of friction surfaces between moving parts, increase load capacity, decrease friction and ware, enforce sealing between cylinder sleeves and piston rings, decrease fuel oil and rube oil consumption as well as gas leakage, boost compression pressure and lower or slower lube oil decomposition. An appropriate running-in could increase mechanical efficiency of engine and bring in a much longer service life of engine and lube-oil.Engine manufacturers prefer shortening the running-in time and improving performance data of engine before it leaves factory so as to get a higher productive efficiency and attract markets. With utilization of appropriate running-in oil for the engine according to reasonable running-in specification, the above-mentioned targets could be achieved. NO doubtfully, those above-mentioned will be beneficial to engine manufacturers and to society.Scientific and rational running-in specification for trial test of engine before leaving factory will give only a sufficient guarantee to running-in quality of trial test of diesel engine and also make a best profits with lowest costs like manpower, water, electricity, oil, facility and factory building etc.).Shandong Society for Internal Combustion Engines held the . research meeting participated by the important manufacturers of diesel engines. The meeting has made discussions on the possibility, feasibility and conditions home and abroad of researches on specification for trail test of running-in of diesel engine before leaving factory, and on its importance, approaches and procedures for test and research, made a decision to establish the project team for researches on specification of trail test of running-in of diesel engine before leaving factory to implement the project. A lot of tests and researches have been carried out in many types of engines by many enterprises by now. On the basis the researches in the project, the paper analyzes comprehensively the researches and practices which has been made during these years. In terms of identification of running-in and importance of design of specification for running-in, it introduces the technology and approaches on research of running-in of diesel engine on the principle of Tribology and lubrication engineering. The key analysis approaches for the project are oil fluid based on Spectral Analysis in combination with other approaches. Fine and polishing machining and additive are adopted in order to improve running -in quality and shorten running-in time. Two approaches are explained in chapters hereinto.The paper introduces in details analyzing and sampling methods for metal element contents in lube oil, introduces in brief the FAS-2C Optical Spectrum Analysis instrument and sampling method with vacuum sampling instrument. In chapter 7, three practical researches on typical models are described. Three test researches on specification for the trial test of engine before leaving the factory are about test researches on techniques of trial test of medium and small power diesel engines before leaving the factory (Huayuan Power), the test research of Specification for running-in trial test of Xinchai 495B Diesel Engine before leaving the factory and the test research of specification for running-in trial test of Weichai 6170 Diesel Engine before leaving the factory. Related research approaches, program, test results, economical benefits are analyzed in details.After research on the projects, it is recognized that it is necessary an important to shorten the running-in time of trial test of engine before leaving the factory and establish a new rational advanced specification for trial test of engine before leaving factory.
