The process of diesel engine's running-in is very complex and meticulous, which involves effective test methods to establish scientific and reasonable running-in techniques. These techniques are designed to increase power efficiency, reduce friction resistance and fuel consumption, shorten running-in time so that the diesel engine can enter into smooth working state promptly and obtain a longer service life, prolong the service life. Ex-factory running-in guarantees the quality of new machine and early using running-in improves its performance.The paper has discussed friction mechanism, wear mechanism and lubrication theory and lubrication, wear and wear particle characteristic of diesel engine. This paper has also discussed the statistical features of ferrography wear particle and the individual features of the wear particle. The paper makes use of ferrography to make ferrography image analyse for the representative oil sample which was produced in diesel engine test such as running-in, reliability and biologic diesel oil experiment. For the ferrogram produced in the running-in experiment, the paper analyses and studies the statistical features of wear particle, using the image handling software to calculate the wear intensity index and simulate the wear curve of running-in issue. According to the features of wear particle that have been derived from ex-factory running-in and early using running-in, it expounds running-in status and wear change tendency in different conditions of operating mode, summarizes running-in regularities and analyses the reasonability of running-in rulers.It studies the representative ferrogram which emerges in the running-in test, acceleration life reliability test and the biologic diesel oil experiment of the diesel engine. The paper analyses the wear particle individual feature, the production mechanism of typical wear particle and wear state. Studying wear particle feature produced not only in the running-in wear stage, but also steady wear stage and rapid wear stage and analysing production mechanism of cast iron particle producing unusual wear from piston ring and cylinder bushing, the paper come to the conclusion that unusual wear is concerned with running-in quality.This paper has also studied the various factors affecting the running-in quality of diesel engine, with special emphasis on the load, speed and action time, Combining the typical features of wear particle and the running-in regularities of diesel engine, it has worked out the suggestion of improving the running-in rulers. the results of this paper have therefore brought about practical reference and theoretical guidance, For promoting running-in technology and increasing running-in quality.
