Jiangnan classical garden which is considered as the treasure of Chinese culture has a strong scientific research value and significance not only from the culture it expresses but also the technique of gardening. The aesthetic value and design ideas of jiangnan classical garden have the important effect to modern landscape design.One of the important goals of modern Landscape design is proving the harmony of human life with nature. The point of view that man-made landscape and natural landscape should be closely integrated has the same idea by coincidence with modern landscape design. Finding the inspiration of modern landscape from Jiangnan classical garden could be regarded as "explore the root".Based on the above thoughts, the thesis has introduced the concept of modern landscape design, basic concept, the trend of development, the status and historical value if Jiangnan classical garden. Compared the design of Jiangnan classical garden and modern landscape, the thesis has summarised the differences and relations of the two. Based on the analysis ,the thesis has further studied Jiangnan classical garden from two aspects, the thoughts and creations when building the garden and the way of design .By summarizing key points from the abuse analysis, the thesis has explored the significance of these points to modern landscape design in last part and therefore has formed a strong support to demonstrate the feasibility and practical significance of transmission form Jiangnan classical garden to modern landscape design.
