As a part of Chinese cultural inheritance and our living environment, the famous historical and cultural cities in our country contain the Chinese ethical spirit value, way of thinking and imagination; and embody the vitality and creativity of Chinese nation. Therefore, to protect these famous historical and cultural cities is to protect our spiritual homestead and living environment. However, under the slogan of "city modernization", the famous historical and cultural cities are suffering from catastrophe. The single city visage of "thousands of cities share the same appearance" is licking up the city features and nation characteristics symbolized by historical towns and streets and old architectures. There is no time to delay to protect these cities. Admittedly, enjoying the modern civilization and bucking of unceasing enhancement of standard of living is the common desire of all citizens, but we can't raze the old city to the ground so as to pursue the so called modern life. The protection of the historical civilizations of the old cities is just like somebody's saying, the real history is formed "page to page", and to use one page to substitute another or unceasingly erase and rewrite a page can only get a gray page of reality. Therefore how to protect the famous historical and cultural cities while we are renovating them is a question we should give serious consideration.On the basis of summing up the former relative theories and researches, this thesis is going to study and discuss this problem in three parts.The first part begins with the historical evolution and necessity of the famous historical and cultural cities and reconstruction of the old cities. This part will give us a clear understanding of the problem, let us definitude it's grave significance, and make us erect firm faith to better protect the famous historical and cultural cities and reconstruct the old cities.The second part analyzed some of the impact between today's reconstruction of old cities and protection of famous cities, such as: the conflict of notions of reconstruction of old cities and protection of famous cities, the clash of the interest of the citizens in the old cities and that of the protection of the famous cities and the bout between some illegal or discipline-breaking conducts in reconstruction of old cities and the laws and statutes on protection of famous cities. The analysis of these conflicts serve to analyze and post the cause of those problems. The analysis of these conflicts also serve to renew the principle in reconstruction of old cities and the protection of the famous cities.Based on the two parts, the third part brings forward several pieces of advice on solution to the conflict of interests between reconstruction of old cities and protection of famous cities.
