Along with industrialization and urbanization, the level of urban development rapidly increased in China. Because of city expansion and city's scale increasing, the built areas of adjacent cities gradually geographically contact, with the promotion of cooperation among the cities which have industrial connection and similar cultural and historical background and the trends of "city unity" development. Both competition and cooperation happened at the aspects of development, infrastructure construction, industrial development and environmental protection between those adjacent cities, basing on the special geopolitical relations and development requirements. For the restrictions of administrative divisions, the obstacles exists in construction land selection, city form and coordination of interests between cities, leading the conflicts between benefit distribution and spatial expansion evident with the urban scale increase and urban land shortage. With this dilemma of development, coordinated development is particularly important for the sustainable development of unifying adjacent cities. The unifying adjacent cities are divided into the main cities (relatively strong strength) and the secondary cities (the relatively weaker), basing on the sizes, development levels and their functions in the region. In the process of development, the main city attracts a secondary city with economic strength and development potential, so that the secondary city has the "closer attachment" relationship in the urban expansion aspect. Meanwhile, after the main city develops to a certain extent, it will release energy, play the role of radiation, and provide strong support for the development of the secondary city. The unifying adjacent cities connect closely, not only with competition, but also with attachment. After reviewing the theory and practical research on the unifying adjacent cities' development and expansion, case studies are utilized in this paper to analyze the spatial characteristics and relationship between unifying adjacent cities, research the related factors and dynamic mechanism of spatial expansion, and summarize the basic model of the unifying adjacent cities'spatial expansion. Setting the Gaoyao city as the example, in the unifying adjacent cities constituted by Goayao city and Zhaoqing city, the position and development style of Gaoyao are analyzed. By analyzing the related factors and dynamic mechanism of spatial expansion, the spatial extension pattern and direction are determined and the future development of urban space in Gaoyao is proposed. The main conclusions are as follows:(1)the spatial expansion of the secondary cities in the unifying adjacent cities should not only be concerned about the city's own development conditions, but also the impact of the main city, considering exchange materials, energy, population, technology, and information with the main city, and the main city's polarization and diffusion effect.(2) Coordination and common development with the main city are taken as the principles in the research of spatial expansion of the secondary city in the unifying adjacent cities. Firstly, the history and virtual links between the main city and the secondary city should be understood clearly, so the future of development in both cities can be forecasted. Secondly, the secondary city's spatial expansion should be guided by analyzing the impact factors, such as the main city's attraction and radiation force. Finally, the spatial expansion direction and modes of the secondary city will be determined in the main city's traction and constraints.(3) The expansion of the secondary city should be close to the main city as far as possible, achieve effective connection with the main city through a variety of ways. Active coordination and mutually beneficial development is the only choice for the unifying adjacent cities.(4) The development of the unifying adjacent cities needs the support from local governments. Different administrative measures should be adopted to promote the coordinated development of the unifying adjacent cities, such as the establishment of the cities alliance and the construction multi-level platform of dialogue, communication exchange, cooperation and coordination, or constructing cooperation mechanisms, cooperative measures and coordinated development planning. For some special cities, even the adjustment of administrative divisions could be used to solve the problems arising in the development of the unifying adjacent cities.
