Double twisted hexagonal steel wire mesh is a new type of reinforced material that is being used in many countries across the globe. Its main uses are for reinforcing retaining structures, one of the important form is reinforced gabion retaining walls. Reinforced gabion retaining wall obtained good effect in many fields, including hydraulic,highway, railway and municipal engineering. In the latest 30 years, scholars from the USA, Italian and Thailand made some researches about double twisted hexagonal steel wire mesh.But some key problems about this reinforcement such as its reinforcement mechanism, interface characteristics and dynamic response were studied merely, even amostly none in China. The theoretical research lagged behind engineering practice.This paper is based on a practical project named west line of Xiangtan-Hengyang expressway, and supported by communicational science and technology foundation of Hunan province(200612).In this paper, the previous studies on reinforcd soil retaining walls are summarized and studies on structural characteristic,reinforced mechanism,reliability and dynamic response of reinforced gabion retaining walls are carried out.The main contents include:(1)Through tensile test, four types of double twisted hexagonal steel wire mesh and three types of geogrid have been tested.It was obtained that curves of their tensile force T and elongation rateε,maximum tensile strength and tensile strength with elongation rate of 2%,5% and 10%,as well as the elongation rate under maximum load.In addition, constraint deformation equation of reinforcement was deduced.(2)With red sandstone backfill,friction characteristics and stress-strain curves of different reinforcements are studied based on pull-out tests,which provide a reference for the design of gabion reinforced soil retaining wall in red sandstone areas.(3)On the basis of previous test and theoretical analytical work, bearing capacity, deformation and stability theory of reinforced gabion retaining structure have been analyzed.(4) Through step loading-unloading model test, vertical and horizontal earth pressure of three new types of retaining strcture and deformation of reinforcements have been studied.Curves of pressure and strain under different loading,as well as secant modulus have been gotten.The relationship of secant modulus and times of cycle has been analysed.(5)By using MTS to simulate train load, dynamic performance model tests of three new types of reinforced retaining wall have been done.Their dynamic characteristics have been discussed.
