| With the times'progress and developments, the pace of China's urbanization accelerates unprecedentedly; big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou rose up almost overnight. These cities speed up their developments by utilizing their own geographical or cultural advantages, but as the trend of globalization comes, dominant cultures keep invading the traditional local culture. As a result peoples' understanding and inheritance of their own cultures and their local distinguishing features are fading, the distinguishing features of different cities are disappearing, the "cultural crisis of cities" is an objective reality and different cities are becoming more and more the same. Moreover as the city population keeps increasing, its environment keeps deteriorating, its resource shortage condition keeps worsening, cultural heritages and their surrounding environments are facing an unprecedented impact. Thus now is the most critical historical period for the protection of cultural heritages.This essay chooses the Ten Buildings in Beijing of the 1950s'as the research object. By understanding the designing and building progress of these buildings via collecting information from large amount of written and photograph documents. Combining with articles, essays, academic books from modern architecture theories, architecture protection and cultural heritages protection as well as the documents from magazines and the internet, based on the research work of former scholars, the author visit repeatedly places among the Ten Buildings such as the Military Museum, the Cultural Palace of Nationalities and then via interviews, depth interviews to understand the real, specific situations of each building so as to obtain abundant first hand materials as the basis of the essay.This essay applies the case-by-case manner, focusing on introducing the architectural features, architectural styles and the situations on the using and maintenance of the Military Museum and the Cultural Palace of Nationalities, then summarizing the time characteristics of these buildings and probing into these two buildings'experiences on utilizing and protection so as to unveil the current situation as well as the future developing trend of China's modern architecture protection. The author tries to carry out the discussion from the angles of the role landmark architectures plays in city developing, city cultural construction and city memory. |
