Contradictions in the transformation of Beijing's old city have become increasingly prominent, more and more people questioned the long-term used transformation method to remove the reconstructed old city in large scale. Nevertheless, we haven't found a reasonable and effective method to the transformation of the old city. Although most of the historical and culture protected areas in the old city have been destroyed successively, the street pattern and historical character of the historical and culture protected area—the South Lane has been preserved until today. And at the same time, South Lane area continuously engaged in self-transformation, upgrading and developing day by day. This thesis undertakes the study mainly focusing on the problems of the motivation and the progression of the transformation in the area, which update mode to use and the significances to the transformation of the Beijing's old city.The main part of this thesis includes four chapters:The first chapter "Exordium" begins with topics of the background and determines the object and scope of the research. Then it introduces current situation in related fields according to different types and the relations and differences between this thesis and results of previous studies. At last it proposes specific methods and frame work of the research.The second chapter "Reviewing of the transformation and renewal process of the South Lane area" mainly does research on the transformation and renewal process of the South Lane area from different aspects such as historical background, precipitating reasons, the whole process, interim results and so on.The third chapter "Analysis of the pattern of transformation and renewal of the South Lane area" intends to find differences between the way of transformation and renewal of the South Lane area and methods mainly used to transform Beijing's old city now by contrasting with the example of Nanchizi transformation. In the end, it summarizes the special mechanism of transformation of the South Lane area from principal pants and balance of interests.The fourth chapter "Significances of transformation and renewal pattern of the South Lane area for the reconstruction of Beijing's old city" starts from the dilemma of the development of Beijing's old city and finds both the benefits and shortcomings of different transformation methods. Finally it summarizes the experiences and the root of this rational and effective method and describes the significances of the South Lane area pattern to the development of Beijing's old city as the end of the thesis.
