Herba Plumbago zeylanica is the whole herbs and root of Plumbago zeylanica L. which belongs to Plumbaginaceae. It is often adopted for medical use in many minorities, such as Dai and Hani nationalities in Yunan Province, Yao nationality in Guangxi Province, and Uigur nationality in Xinjiang Province, and so on. It is urgently required a large quantities of Herba Plumbago zeylanica herbs for the need of new medicines and extracts such as Qubai babuqi Tablet, plumbagin acaricide, plumbagin and so on.It had been studied on chemical composition, pharmacognosy, medical efficacy and acute toxicity of P. zeylanica L. in crude herbs by our research group, and it were found that:Ⅰ:Plumbagin had high anti-tumor activity and other medical efficacy;Ⅱ: Crude Herba Plumbago zeylanica was distributed in Yunnan Province, Guangxi Province and other places on the edge of extinction; however there is few scattered cultivation.Ⅲ:Now it is urgently demanded a lot of crude herbs of Herba Plumbago zeylanica. So it should be cultivated in wide scale to satisfy the needs of domestic and international market and the sustainability of the crude resources of Herba Plumbago zeylanica. But there are no cultivation techniques and quality standards of wild species varying family.Five compounds were isolated by silica gel chromatography from the Ethyl acetate parts. It was identified as plumbagin,β-sitosterol, daucosterol, vanillic acid, and stearic acid.It was studied the propagation and breeding of P. zeylanica L. at the first time. Combined extract of plumbagin,β-sitosterol, daucosterol and so on. The results showed that: offshoot seedling was the best one, followed by cuttings seedling. However, due to the limited resources of wild P. zeylanica L. and the samples couldn't be enough for following test, so cutting propagation was still be selected. Branch age and length of the stems had little influence on cutting survival rate with no need of dealing with ABP ABT for the roots. It was screened systematically on P. zeylanica L. at fist time with different cultivation conditions such as soil, vegetation, light, NPK fertilizer, seeds seedlings, offshoot seedling and cutting seedlings by evaluating the height and stem diameter of their stem, and the content of their extracts, plumbagin,β-sitosterol, daucosterol, and so on. The results show that as following:Ⅰ: It could be better quality of cultivated P. zeylanica L. under conditions of Clay, full light, K fertilizer and N fertilizer.Ⅱ:It was verified again that the content of plumbagin was highest in roots, and the content ofβ-sitosterol and daucosterol was the highest levels in leaves. So it was suggested that leaves of P. zeylanica L. could be used for a new resource plants ofβ-sitosterol and daucosterol.Ⅲ: It was determined at fist time with the root, stem and leaves of Crude herbs of Herba Plumbago zeylanica from January to December in South China Medicinal Material(SCMM), Institute of Medicinal Plants in Yunnan branch, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. The results show that the content of plumbagin was relatively higher from November to January, which was consistent with the local harvest from October to December. However, the content ofβ-sitosterol and daucosterol was lowest or not detected from November to December. It was suggested that the best harvest time should be decided according to the different needs of different active ingredient. In order to screening and specifying the agricultural techniques and evaluating the quality of cultivated Herba Plumbago zeylanica, this subject has been provided scientifically experimental and basic data for its application and manufacture research.
